We’re ironically burning the state down to make a point about the ephemeral nature of life. This is irony. Cities burn ironically to make a point about the nature of police and public policy. The balance of security and liberty; mitigating the collateral human damage of communism and capitalism both. This is ironic. The National Guard hasn’t been deployed ironically.
Being “trad” and Christian is the new punk rock. It is an affected style and belief system embraced ironically as a counterpoint to an atomized life of individual hedonism and pleasure-seeking. The belief in God is done ironically to make a point. The impended religious fervor is a natural extension of the bit. If believing in the divine and healing love of Christ is cool, consider me Miles Davis!
The homophobia is an ironic exploration about the erosion of male identity and the expression of inadequacy and lack of fulfillment as the roles of masculinity become more shallow and nuanced faster than to which they can become adapted. It is a simple rhetorical device by which we maintain a sense of self and establish a sense of purpose in a shared experience; that of nihilism and pageantry. It’s all “gay”. This is done ironically.
Sincerity is the last form of irony. That’s what makes this piece so interesting.
